We are fortunate to have handled some really beautiful and unique Mannlicher Schoenauers over the last few years, and this Factory Deep Relief Engraved example is no exception. Imported by AF Stoeger in New York, this special order Model MC rises to the top as a real jewel. Having been locked away for many years in the custody a consummate collector, this rifle retains a very high level of original condition.
The original blueing is in oustanding shape and could be rated as high as 99% as we see it. Beside minor high edge wear to the finish, there is no evidence of abuse, corrosion or flaws. The interior of the action is just as clean as the outside. The animal heads on the front ring, floorplate and trigger bow remain crisp and detailed and virtually unchanged since they left the factory. There is minor patina on the "in the white" bolt, which only adds character to the rifle. The bolt closes just as slick and positively as one would expect from a Schoenauer from this era and the adjustable double set triggers are a joy to behold. Chambered for 243 Winchester, the 22" barrel retains crisp, clean, shiny bore, chamber and rifling, and is a further testament to how little use this example has seen. The scope is a rail type 2.3-7x Kahles with a variation of claw mount attachment: The rear latch depresses, then the scope is rotated, pivoting 90 degrees clockwise off the front base. Scope lock-up is tight and positive. The optics are clear and bright with fine cross hair reticule and the adjustments are smooth and crisp. The scope's exterior finish has some minor nicks and dings, but nothing that will affect its function.
The walnut stock retains super original finish, with only minor handling marks and superficial dings inn the surface. The yellowing of the white grip and fore end spacers is a great barometer of the unaltered original finish. Pull is 14" from the front trigger over the original Stoeger-marked recoil pad. Benefiting greatly from careful storage, the pad is still very soft and supple, and has retained its proper shape.
